The Amazing Street Kids

On the industrial waterfront of Baltimore City, runaway kids from terrible forester homes found their safety together. An old abandon tobacco warehouse became their living quarters as the numbers of orphans grew to thirty-five. The children’s ages ranged from six to fifteen but their stories were all the same. Their way of life was begging, stealing and running from the police. Anne and Dougal Fraser had a tavern on the waterfront and knew these kids needed help before they ended up dead. Initially, the Frasers took two street kids into their home and before they knew it, the number was five. The homeless children brought luck to the Frasers in a young girl named Rita Thomas. Rita had been raped in the forester home she lived in but she had a God given beautiful voice that her parents were developing before they were killed. The Frasers featured her singing at the tavern and people came from all over the city to hear her sing.

Spread Your Wings

The inner city of Baltimore was not what I had pictured in my dreams. The streets were filled with hoodlums, with violence, and they were filthy. Who knew-even murders might have been committed on Washington Street. This was not the place for a kid from the suburbs who loved playing Cowboys and Indians. As my dad called, I knew we were here for good in our new old row house. Thus begins the new novel from Louis Tabor, a story inspired by his own childhood in the inner streets of Baltimore. The narrator is a young boy names Fuzzy Duncan, aged twelve, who has to move to the inner city with his parents and brothers for economical reasons. The city is nothing like the neighborhood the Duncans moved from. The boys will have to adjust, and quickly, to survive. As the weeks pass, Fuzzy sees, hears, and does things no twelve-year-old could possibly be prepared for and finds himself and his personality changing. Whether it is learning about city life from the shoeshine boy, picking peaches with the snakes, swimming naked with the girls, or talking trash to prisoners, Fuzzy Duncan will produce a happy grin.

Times of Courage

“Times of Courage” is a caring and yet chilling story about the adventures of Karen and Jackson Thomas. Hunting alligators at fourteen, very little to eat, ragged old dirty clothes and terrible living conditions is a life hard to imagine for two young kids. They knew they had to escape from their mean, rotten father or they would die in the everglades swamp. Their bold departure leads them into the caring arms of a black woman, Aunt Grace. Venturing to Winston/Salem N.C. to find good jobs was a dangerous undertaking for the Thomas kids. Along the way Karen faces several life-threatening situations and earns the status of heroine which leads to making TV commercials. Jackson Thomas discovers his love for NASCAR racing and finds a friend to mentor him to the pro circuit. Along the way they gain many friends and find love. Their new life is filled with adventure, problems, and big decisions and they know courage is what is required for them to be successful.
